Church of Santa Maria dei Laici known as Santa Maria dei Bianchi

Church of the confraternity of the same name that ran the adjacent ‘spedal grande’, characterised by its long portico. Built in the first half of the 14th century. The single-nave interior, transformed in the Baroque period, is rich in works of art, including an Annunciation by Federico Barocci and his pupil Ventura Mazza and a stupendous cycle, on canvas, of the life of the Virgin from the early 17th century, as well as the paintings on the vault above the high altar, by Francesco Allegrini of Gubbio (17th century).
The church crypt preserves some of the frescoes of the Passion of Christ cycle, frescoed around 1470 by a pupil of Nelli. Inside the crypt there is a video projection presenting a virtual reconstruction of the original environment. Two episodes of the cycle, the ‘Flagellation’ and ‘The Nailing’, are currently on site. The remaining ones, detached in 1965 for conservation reasons, are on display in the Diocesan Museum of Gubbio. In the hypogeum oratory, 15th-century frescoes with Stories from the Passion remain (partly transported to the Diocesan Museum), due to an anonymous pupil of Nelli.
