Church of San Giuliano

The Church of S. Giuliano, located in front of Piazza del Bargello, is one of the oldest buildings in Gubbio. Many scholars assume, in fact, that it stands above one of the gates of the Umbrian city walls, as evidenced by the bull of Pope Lucius III (1182) and Bishop Bentivoglio. The church façade originally had a simple structure, typical of the Roman-Gothic period. It was modified in the 17th century with the addition of a sandstone portal, a balcony and a domed bell tower. Around 1950, the unsafe bell tower was demolished. The interior has three altars, the main one in Renaissance style and the other two in brickwork with faux-marble decorations.
