Church of Santa Maria al Corso

The church of San Maria dei Servi in Gubbio is located in Corso Garibaldi. It is accessed by a double flight of steps bordered by an elegant palombino balustrade. The façade is Renaissance in style, characterised by a large sundial, while the interior, with a single nave, underwent a general renovation in the 18th century. The Servants of Mary, a religious congregation that came to Gubbio at the invitation of Gubbio bishop Pietro Gabrielli (1326 – 1345), served there for many years. It seems that there was another church on the site in ancient times, but no trace of it remains. The church is currently called: Santa Maria al Corso, because it is located on Corso Garibaldi; Santa Maria dei Servi, because the ‘Servants of Mary’ served there for many centuries; Santa Cristina, because the collegiate church of the same name was moved there in 1825.
