Church of Santa Croce della Foce

Just outside the Metauro Gate, the ancient church of Santa Croce della Foce is the result of renovations and extensions of a sacred building that had existed since the 12th century. It is the pivotal place of Gubbio’s devotion, as the Good Friday procession has been held here since the Middle Ages. The first mention of the Confraternity that still has its headquarters here dates back to the 15th century. The interior, with a single nave, features a gilded and carved wooden coffered ceiling decorated with paintings by Federico Zoi (‘500). On the high altar, by C. Magistretti, are the 16th-century wooden statue of Christ by Neri Alberti of Sansepolcro and that of Mary of Sorrows, usually carried in procession on Good Friday.
