The Triumph of David

In this beautiful painting executed around 1661, a testament to Francesco Allegrini’s painting style, we admire the young David in the moment following the slaying of the Philistine giant Goliath, whose head, detached from his neck, is carried in triumph by the Jewish shepherd boy at the point of a sword.Against the backdrop of a leaden sky we find the encampment of Israel’s soldiers, where the lifeless body of the giant can be seen in the center; while in the foreground four young Israelites celebrate with music, song and dance the triumph of the future King David, who turns to them with a smug expression, wearing a crown on his head feathered and behind him draperies. The elegant scene depicted here echoes the atmosphere of an identical subject painted by the same Francesco Allegrini in the Stanza di Davide at Palazzo Pamphilj in Piazza Navona, but in a more intimate setting, marked by a darker color palette.
